Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or SLE is now an important and common illness of modern times. Millions of people worldwide, mostly women, face an unpredictable future as they struggle daily with the often debilitating health consequences of Lupus, a potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the body’s own healthy tissue. Imagine waking daily to the unforgiving pain and struggle of lupus from head to toe. And when sleep would bring welcome relief from the day’s aches, the steroids used to alleviate the pain make sleep virtually impossible! Lupus patients understand this vicious circle. A life with the chronic and unpredictable multisystem disease that is lupus remains rife with uncertainty. Health authorities and governments still under-recognise this chronic autoimmune disease as a global health problem.

Lupus Alert is the only registered non-governmental organisation that provides active physical, moral, emotional and financial support to lupus sufferers in Mauritius. We are a self-help group run by volunteers of whom the majority has Lupus.We hope to use our own experiences of the illness to assist those newly diagnosed in understanding their condition and to offer an empathetic listening ear to any problems the Lupus sufferers and their closed ones may be facing. Lupus Alert is an NGO that is essentially People. An NGO that is full of passion, vision, motivation, compassion and determination.
